Apple Measure app since iOS 12
If you are on iOS 12 or later, you’ll notice a new Apple app called Measure. This app uses augmented reality to act as a tape measure or ruler. Instead of using a third-party app, you can now use this stock virtual ruler app to measure objects around you with the phone’s camera. Check out this guide to measure length, size of objects using iPhone for more details.
AR Ruler can be used to measure length, angle, area and height. This app lets you scan surface of any object and measure length or distance for free. But you have to buy the full version in order to measure height, angle or area.
To use this app to measure length and width of an object or measure distance between objects using iPhone, first grant it the access to your camera. On the home screen of this app, you can find and change the unit of measurement on the left side: CM, M, IN, FT. Put the object you want to measure on your iPhone screen. Place the + plus icon at the starting point and then tap on it to select the starting point. Move your iPhone toward the end point, you’ll see the yellow ruler getting extended with the measurement visible in both the virtual ruler and the top box. Tap on the + icon again to select the end point.
It is very easy and intuitive to measure length, width, height of any objects or distance between objects using this AR ruler app for iPhone. It works fine in measuring small and medium objects. It can’t help us measure large objects though.
The free version of the AR Ruler has some appealing features that normally can only be found with paid ruler apps, such as flashlight which allows for measurements in dark environments, Screenshot to automatically save your measurements as screenshot to photo album so you don’t have to manually capture iPhone screen, etc.
