Trim music & audio on iPhone

Have you ever wanted to know how you can slice or cut a song, voice recording, or sound track on iPhone? You need an audio editor app for that. Hokusai is a free audio editor app that can do the job in an easier way. In this article, we will show you how to trim music and audio files on iPhone using this free audio editor. (free to download and use with basic features, optionally upgrade to pro version for more advanced features through in-app purchase.)

Adding audio & music to the editor on iPhone

There are different ways you can add the sound track, audio file or music songs to the editor app. If it was saved on your computer hard drive, you can sync them to iPhone via iTunes or a third-party iOS data transfer tool. You can also upload the audio or music to a cloud service, like iCloud, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, then download the music or audio from a cloud service to the audio editor app on your iPhone.

Run the audio editor app on iPhone. Tap the Add(+icon) at the top right corner to create a new project.

Then tap on a music track to add it from your Music Library or add audio files from a cloud service.

Trim audio or music on iPhone

Once the audio or music files being imported into the editor app. Press and hold on the sound wave, then drag left or right to select the audio part you like to keep. Release your finger, you will see a pop-up toolbar as shown below.

You can touch the Play button at the top right corner to play the selected section of the audio or music. Drag the front and/or end point to adjust your selection. Tap the selection to reveal the above toolbar and choose Trim to save only the selection and trim away the rest.

Cut audio on iPhone

If you choose Cut instead of Trim, the selection will be cut off while the not selected portion will remain.

Export audio/Music

Touch the spanner icon at the top right section, choose Share Audio from the drop-down menu, then export the trimmed audio, sound or music to the Files app on iPhone, a cloud service or other compatible apps on your device.

Update Aug 2020: this article was originally published in Mar 2018 and has since been updated. in this update, the audio editor app was upgraded to the most recent version 2.5.6, new screenshots were added to the above post to replace those old ones.

    It will not let me add this ringtone I created to my phone nor my itunes library? what am I missing??

    1. thanks for the feedback. The app should be free when we downloaded and reviewed it back in early 2018. we can see it is now free with in-app purchases. we haven’t buy the Pro pack from the in-app purchase, however it seems we can still use its free version to trim an audio using latest version2.5.6.
